I am sure, you will all have heard about the devastating Earthquake in Van that happened yesterday. The death toll is as yet unknown but there are still hundreds of people unaccounted for.
At times like this, as human beings, we feel the need to do something no matter how small.
We could well have been on our yearly jaunt to Urfa when it happened and, had I been I would have gone to Van and given some hands on physical help in whatever way I could, but, we have not made the journey yet this winter and are still here in Didim.
The cargo company MNG (in Didim) are offering to send aid parcels for free to Van. We have put out an appeal on all the usual forums asking for donations of winter clothes, footwear, blankets etc.. to be packaged up and dropped to our office so that we can ensure they carry the correct labels but this all needs to be done by 4pm tomorrow. I know there are many generous, kind and charitable people here in Didim so I am hoping we have a decent amount to send in support.
For people with Turkish Mobile phones, it is possible to donate 5tl to the fund by either sending a text to the Search and Rescue Association by typing ‘AKUT’ and sending to 2930 or a blank text to Kizilay (Turkish Red Crescent)to 2860
It is also possible to donate in general to Kizilay if you have a Turkish Bank account. See here: http://www.kizilay.org.tr/english/sayfa.php?t=-Donate
For those not in Turkey, Global Giving have set up an Earthquake Relief Fund here: http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/turkey-earthquake-relief-and-recovery-fund/
Selahattin Demirtaş who is the co-chairman of the pro-Kurdish Peace & Democracy Party (BDP), posted this message to his Twitter account: “The aid coming from every part of Turkey for the earthquake victims in Van is a sign of brotherhood. Thanks everybody for the aid.”
There is aid arriving in Van from from all over the globe and still much much more needed. People are still trapped under the rubble, some will not make it out.
If you can think of any other way to help, please……….. Just do it!!
